Regulations

Mission

A specialized library, whose collection constitutes mainly of documentation in the area of biomedicine;
Contributes in all its actions to support the research and student community of area of biomedicine in information needs.

Objectives

To guaranty the availability of useful, diversified and updated information;
To improve the services provided;
To acquire, register, maintain and diffuse documents which interest researchers and students who work in the IGC as well as external users.

To whom is the library meant for?

The library is essentially intended for internal users, that is, researchers, teaching faculties, students and staff of this Institute;

The use of the library is also extended to external users, either from the national scientific community or from the higher education, in proceeding with their work whenever bibliographic support is needed in biomedical sciences area or alike.

Documental Collection

The IGC Library houses a collection of 30 years of holdings of journals in the biomedical area. Currently, it receives 125 subscriptions and provides local online access to 122 titles. The existing collection consists mainly of the following thematic domains:
· Biology, Biochemistry, Genetics, Pharmacology, Microbiology, Physiology, Immunology, Virology, Cellular Biology, Neurosciences, Developmental Biology.

How to use the library

· Access to the bookcases.

Access to the printed version of journals is free, which means that the user can take them from the shelves and consult them freely. However, they should not be placed back on the shelves but should be left on the table indicated for the purpose.

· Order in which Journals are placed.

Journals are placed on the shelves in alphabetical order of title, from left to right.
Older numbers of journals are kept in two rooms reserved for that purpose.

· On-line access to electronic journals.

Any user can access on-line, in the library, to electronic journals subscribed by the IGC for the current year. For this purpose the library has four fully networked workstations in the multi-media room.

· Internal and external loans.

Due to the collection content being essentially used for reference, no loans can be issued.

· User Card.

To use the services of the library you must register, by filling in a registration form available at the library. User cards do not exist presently.

· Catalogue.

The library has an electronic catalogue, Bibliopac, that is available at its web page.
Through the catalogue, the user may know which books, journals and dissertations can be found at the library, which books can be found at the laboratories and which scientific articles have been published by the IGC researchers.
Besides, at the library page of the IGC site, there is an alphabetical list of all periodical publications belonging to its collection and a list of on-line journals subscribed by the IGC for the current year.

Library services

Free access to all documents and the possibility of consultation in the reading room;
Free usage of services provided with the exception of photocopying and printing which are self-service and can be done with pre-purchased, rechargeable cards on a machine installed in the copying area;
Browse the internet;
Access to on-line journals subscribed by the IGC;
Download available network information to diskettes or compact-discs;
There are data ports and outlets in the reading room, conveniently at hand, so that users with laptops can use them and connect to the internet for on-line reading;
Technical support and bibliographic orientation to the user.

Note:

All journal copying and printing must be carried out in accordance with copyright laws;
No software installing is allowed in local consulting network.
In no circumstances are books or journals to be taken away from the library. Please note that it is impossible for this library to send any copies of journal articles to its users whether by fax, mail or e-mail.

Rooms and Equipment

Consulting:
. A multi-media room for on-line consulting (internet and electronic journals subscribed by the IGC) with four computers;
. A reading room for printing journals where laptops can be connected.

Two rooms for research work, each with a computer, may be reserved for a determined period of time, with prior, due justification;

The copying area, where there is a black and white laser printer for printing internet browsing results or on-line journals, four copy machines and a guillotine-cutter.

At no place in the library are users allowed to smoke, eat or drink.

Using the library presupposes having knowledge and acceptance of the working rules of its services.
